I keep having the same questions asked, when will it snow, why are we having no snow.
For sometime now our weather is coming from a mild South westerly direction and it looks like it will remain stuck like this for another 7-10 days.
The Polar Vortex is very cold, maybe near record low temperatures. The polar vortex is a cold pool of air approximately 50 miles high. So its very cold and there is a very strong air flow around the vortex keeping the cold locked in. We are not seeing any reversal wind flow to bring Europe any cold, wintry weather.
There could be some changes starting to take place at the end of this month early February but we will just have to wait and see.
Weather around the world see’s some extremes, hot temperatures in Australia with these bush fires. Near record cold temperatures around eastern areas of Canada -50 c and -60 c over parts of Greenland, and even sea ice levels are close to 10 year average. Europe has little snow cover at this time with warm temperatures.
The high pressure in the Pacific area is helping to keep very cold wintry weather over Canada and Alaska and helped to keep the strong jet stream moving towards Europe leaving very mild temperatures over western Europe. There are some indications that the high pressure in the pacific ” I have marked with a yellow arrow” could be replaced with low pressure trough changing the flow of the jet stream. This could also put some pressure on the vortex maybe causing a sudden stratospheric warming or displacement.
So winter for Europe may not be over just yet, we have to look towards mid to later February or even March, so we will have to just wait and see.
