I have been asked what is happening with the Polar Vortex so here is an update.
Well the Polar vortex is still continuing to warm quickly and it looks like a Sudden Stratospheric Warming will take place around the 4th of January and a wind reversal is forecast to take place on this date.
If this does happen it’s a slow process to bring an onset of winter, so we will have to be patient and wait and see, it takes between 10-21 days so around mid January it could start to become interesting. Not every SSW does result in winter for Western parts of Europe, but it does increase the chance of a winter.
This image shows the temperature of the Vortex. I have marked the figure showing the forecasted wind reversal.
The temperature graph shows the temperature of the Polar Vortex now and forecasted temperature. You can see how the temperature is expected to suddenly rise.
I will continue watching the Polar Vortex and I will update you with the possible, split or displacement and wind reversal.
