I am continuing to watch the Polar Vortex (PV) with interest. It is looking like later this week will be the 2nd PV sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) that will have taken place this winter. The first one was minor but this one looks like being a stronger one. To have two SSW in a season is fairly unusual. There are too many questions and no-one knows the answers, will the PV split, displace or will it be totally destroyed for this season.

It looks like later this week we will have a wind reversal then it will remain fairly weak. For the troposphere to respond to the SSW and wind reversal normally takes a few weeks. There is a lot of uncertainty whether this change will bring cold and wintry weather. If it does it will be late February early March. So we have to patiently wait and see if this brings us a late winter and delayed Spring.
